One of the South India's greatest temple towns is Madurai, which is synonymous with the famous Meenakshi Temple. Madurai has a rich cultural heritage passed on from the great Tamil era more than 2000 years old, situated on the banks of river Vaigai. Madurai was an important cultural and commercial center even as early as 600 AD. It was the capital city for the Pandiyan Empires.
